Women at the Spring
A series of three integrated workshops created to empower women by connecting them
to the prairie through the study of its history, the role of women then and now, and how visual and performing arts within the natural
habitat strengthen and guide women.
Session 1: "I am Water"
Saturday, February 3, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This writing and reflection workshop will use water and prairie to explore the connection between women and words. Twyla Hansen and
Kelly Madigan Erlandson will help participants tap into their creativity through journal-making, prairie exploration, and the art of
putting images into words.
Solo performer Pippa White will present a number of prairie stories by and about women, focusing on women who have gone before us,
our collective “grandmothers.” She will also lead an exploration of personal ancestral stories and how to successfully craft them.
The relaxed and informal presentations will focus on process, not product.
Fee: $30/person. All materials will be provided, including lunch. Participants should dress for outdoor activities. Sponsored by the
Nebraska Humanities Council.
Session 2: "I am Wind"
Saturday, April 21, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Participants will explore their creativity through movement, dance, and drumming. The morning will begin with gentle yoga session outdoors
in the prairie, weather permitting. Liz Merey, a long-time yoga instructor, will lead a selection of basic stretches and movement
specifically to activate, energize, and synchronize the mind/body connection.
Following the yoga session, Deb Eisloeffel of HealthRHYTHMS will lead participants in making their own drums and exploring rhythmic
play in a relaxed, inclusive community. A drumming circle will be formed, followed by a rhythmic movement experience set to the music of
the drums. Pam Barger, well-known singer/musician/poet, will close the workshop with a lively performance of women and song.
Fee: $35/person. All materials will be provided, including lunch. Opportunities will be provided for reflection and journaling.
Participants should dress for outdoor activities.
Session 3: "I am Prairie"
Saturday, October 20, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. [Update: Class is full waiting list available.]
In this visual arts workshop, Lincoln artists Susan Brasch and Judy Hart will facilitate the creation of personal empowerment symbols
derived from the participants’ life experiences and strengths. The prairie will provide the backdrop and materials for the day’s activities.
Participants will create a personal prairie sculpture, and as a community weave a “Voice of the Prairie” piece, which will be exhibited at
Spring Creek Prairie. Reflection, journaling, and a walk to the spring will be incorporated in the activities.
Fee: $35/person. All materials will be provided, including lunch. Participants should dress for outdoor activities.
Registration: Fill out registration form or call (402) 797-2301. On-line
registration is not available. Workshops limited to 25 participants each. Attend all three workshops for $90!
